Shopify SEO and SEO apps: your questions, answered.
What Shopify does for your SEO out of the box, what it leaves to you, and where an SEO app fits in, for Google and for AI search.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify gives you a solid technical base: it generates your sitemap.xml automatically, themes add canonical tags, every product, collection and page gets an editable meta title and meta description, and every store runs on SSL and a global CDN. What Shopify does not do is the ongoing work: writing content that targets real searches, linking your pages together, fixing broken links and spotting pages that compete with each other. That is where most stores lose rankings.
What are the most common SEO problems on Shopify stores?
The same ones come back on almost every store we audit: duplicate content (copied supplier descriptions, near-identical product pages), missing or generic meta titles, images without alt text, broken links and 404 pages left behind after a product is deleted, orphan pages that no internal link points to, and several pages fighting for the same query, also called keyword cannibalization.
What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting your store cited in answers written by AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. SEO aims for a ranking in a list of links, GEO aims for a mention inside the answer. Both rest on the same base: AI engines draw on pages they can crawl, understand and trust, so a store that is well optimized for Google already has a head start in AI search.
How do I get my Shopify store cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices (Google Search Central). In practice, that means pages that answer a precise question in plain language, product and collection descriptions with real details (materials, sizes, uses), internal links that show which page covers which topic, and mentions of your brand on other sites. Google also states that no special structured data or AI text file is needed for these features.
Do I need an SEO app on Shopify?
Not to get started: the built-in Shopify settings cover the basics. An app becomes useful once your catalog grows past what you can check by hand. With hundreds of products, collections and blog posts, nobody re-reads every meta title, alt text and internal link each week. A good Shopify SEO app crawls the whole store, tells you what to fix first and applies the fixes for you.
What should a good Shopify SEO app do?
At minimum: score every page and list what to fix, generate meta titles, meta descriptions and alt text, find broken links and create 301 redirects, detect duplicate content and cannibalization, compress your images and keep a clean XML sitemap. The more complete apps go further: they add internal links between your pages, write blog articles and help you earn backlinks. We compare the options in our guide to the best Shopify SEO apps.
Will an SEO app slow down my Shopify store?
It depends on how it works. Most SEO fixes are written into your Shopify data (titles, descriptions, alt text, links inside your content) and add nothing to page load. What can weigh on site speed is an app that loads heavy scripts on every page of your storefront. Check your Core Web Vitals before and after an install, and remove the apps you no longer use: older apps can leave code behind in your theme.
Can I use several SEO apps at the same time?
You can, but watch for overlap. Two apps that both rewrite your meta tags, or a theme and an app that both add Product structured data, send duplicate and sometimes conflicting signals to search engines. Keep one app per job, and check the source of a product page after each install.
How long does Shopify SEO take to show results?
According to the Google SEO Starter Guide, some changes take effect in a few hours and others can take several months, so wait a few weeks before judging a change. Technical fixes such as redirects or duplicate titles are picked up as soon as Google recrawls the pages. New content and backlinks take longer to move rankings. Track progress in Google Search Console on all your queries, not on a single keyword.
How does SEO Alpin help with SEO and GEO?
GEO rests on the same base as SEO, so we work on what search engines and AI engines read: blog articles that answer the questions your customers ask, pages linked together by topic, structured data added to your store through our theme extension, and a clean technical base without broken links or duplicate pages. No tool can promise a citation in ChatGPT. What we can do is make your store easier to understand, and easier to quote.
Is SEO Alpin free?
Yes, SEO Alpin has a free plan with 50 AI credits a month: image compression and alt text, the Google Search Console and GA4 connection, speed optimization, duplicate content and cannibalization detection, internal linking and sitemap editing. Paid plans add more AI credits and advanced features: keyword research and whole-store AI optimization on Pro, the automatic blog on Max. Current plans and prices are on our Shopify App Store listing, and you can start with a free SEO audit of your store.
